On 30 May 2017, a Cessna 441 Conquest II operated by Rossair, a charter flight operator and fixed-base operator based at Adelaide Airport, Adelaide, South Australia, crashed near Renmark Airport in Renmark, South Australia at about 4.30pm while doing flight training.[1]

The Cessna Conquest (registered VH-XMJ)[2] departed Adelaide Airport at about 4pm Australian Central Standard Time (ACST;UTC+09:30). The onboard emergency beacon was activated at about 4.30pm.[1] (Beacon activations in the Australian search and rescue zone are notified to the Australian Rescue Coordination Centre, operated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, that then coordinates a response.) A search was conducted and South Australian Police's Riverland patrol discovered the wreck after nightfall, about 4 km from Renmark Airport.[1] (Sunset was 5:05pm; last light was 5:35pm)


The Rossair chief pilot, Martin Scott (48), was flying with two others, Paul Daw (65) who was being tested, and Stephen Guerin (56), a Civil Aviation Safety Authority staff member, on board the Cessna Conquest.[3]

Daw had been chief pilot at charter flight operator Hartwig Air, and was due to retire on the Friday after the crash. He had arranged to continue flying with Rossair, and was doing an "induction flight".[3]

Guerin had formerly been a pilot with various air operators, and had worked at CASA since 2008. He was observing the check flight.[3]


Rossair grounded its aircraft, pending the investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.[1] Under Australian aviation regulations, an air operator must have a designated and approved chief pilot, which Rossair would also have to appoint before again operating its aircraft unless CASA authorises an interim arrangement.
