On 30 June 2019, a group vandalised the Durga Temple in the Hauz Qazi, area of Chandni Chowk, Delhi, India. [1] The temple was attacked following a quarrel over parking which then escalated.[2]

Background

The fight begun over the parking issue at 10:00 pm on 30 June 2019, which later turned into the communal clash.[3] A fruit vendor, Sanjeev Gupta, got into a spat with one Aas Mohammad over parking of Mohammad's bike outside Sanjeev's house. According to Sanjeev's wife, Babita, Aas Mohammad resisted. He was then beaten by a group of Sanjeev's friends. [4]

Sequence of Events

A team from Hauz Qazi police station reached on the spot and detained Gupta and Mohammad. Cross First Information Reports (FIRs) were also registered.[4]

Temple Attack

Around 200 people gathered at the police station after rumours that Mohammad had died went viral on WhatsApp. The group then moved on to damage the temple.[5]

Stone Pelting

On 1st July, at 2 pm, there was fresh round of stone pelting from other group in which Navbharat Times photographer, Surender Kumar, was injured.[4]

Aftermath

Shops around Lal Kuan were shut down, access to temple was also restricted and the entry of outsiders into the area from Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar was restricted.[4] Several companies from Delhi Police and Central forces were deployed to the area to keep the two groups separate from each other. The police had called the religious leaders from both communities to defuse the situation.[4]

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Central Delhi tweeted over the issue:

"After some altercation & scuffle over a parking issue in Hauz Qazi, tension arose b/w two groups of people from different communities. We have taken legal action & all efforts are being made to pacify feelings & bring about amity. People are requested to help in restoring normalcy"[6]

Arrest

Delhi Police arrested 3 accused who were involved in the temple attack on 2 July 2019.[7]

Reaction

Imam of Old Delhi’s Fatehpuri mosque, Mufti Mukarram, has called upon Muslims to rebuild the temple.[8]He has asked everyone to maintain calm and to sort out the issue by sitting together.

On 2 July 2019, Indian Parliamentarian from Chandani Chowk and Union minister Harsh Vardhan (Delhi politician) visited the site of Temple and requested people to maintain the peace and harmony.[9] He said,

It is very unfortunate and painful. The kind of things done to the temple is unforgivable. I have been told that the Police has been involved, culprits will be arrested soon and punished. I appeal to the people to maintain harmony.[10]
