Film

Athens Rising: The Sicyon Project: Volume One is a documentary film presenting performances from the living rooms, backyards, and venues throughout Athens, Georgia. The film presents music, dance, food, stand-up comedy, theater, visual art, and the origins of Athfest[1]. James Preston described this first installment of the series as having a focus on the catalysts in the Athens community in terms of creating new companies, projects, and art[2]. The film is part one in a three year, six documentary series of films[3].

Synopsis

The film features interviews, live footage, and a soundtrack featuring local bands that were active in the 2010's era of the music scene in Athens, Georgia, including Athens Tango Project, Dimmen, Potted Plant, Half Acid, Linqua Franqa, Scooterbabe, Cinemechanica, Waitress, Blue Bodies, A. Mack, Joe Shadowy Peeples, The YOD, Follow Forever, KXNG BLANCO, Caulfield, WesdaRuler, Murk Daddy Flex, Jay Gonzalez (of Drive-By Truckers), and Calico Vision[4]. In addition to featuring bands, notable music venues such as Pity Party, created by Taylor Chicoine, mastering studio owner Joel Hatstat of Joel Hatstat Audio, and recording studio owner Jesse Mangum of The Glow Recording Studio, are interviewed for insights into their contributions to music in Athens[5][6][7]. In addition, the documentary focuses on the hip hop scene in Athens with a feature on Volumes Hip Hop, a magazine that chronicles hip hop music in Athens[8][9].

The film features other areas of Athens culture such as Heirloom Cafe & Fresh Market executive chef Garrett MacFalda, the community comedy series Krakin Jokes [10], Broderick Flanigan of Flanigan's Portrait Studio in East Athens[11], the quarterly dance and spoken-word poetry performance Small Box Series, the clowning performances of Peepa Show[12], and AthFest Educates[13][14].

Production

James Preston cited a major influence on the documentary as Athens, GA: Inside/Out, which he watched three times throughout production of the film[15]. Other influences discussed by the director during production were the quirkiness of Portlandia (TV series) and the style of Chef's Table[16].

Exhibition

The film premiered at Cine Athens on June 22nd, 2018 during the Athfest Music and Arts Festival[17][18]. Further exhibitions of the film were presented at the 40 Watt Club, The Foundry, The World Famous, Live Wire, Trio Contemporary Art Gallery[19], and the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art[20].
