Jason B. Cope (born March 10, 1969) is a board certified[1][2] American-born orthodontist,[3] inventor,[4][5][6][7] educator,[4][8][9] and international speaker,[4][10] best known for his early work on Craniofacial Distraction osteogenesis and later developing orthodontic Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs), nomenclature, and clinical protocols.[11][12][13]

Early life

Jason B. Cope was born in Dallas, Texas, when his father, Dr. Donald D. Cope, also an orthodontist,[3] was in dental school at Baylor College of Dentistry. After his Dad finished his orthodontic residency, the Cope family moved to Bossier City, Louisiana, where Jason and his two younger brothers were raised. The younger Dr. Cope started his orthodontic career at the age of 13, when he started working in his Dad’s office, initially as a lab technician pouring and grinding orthodontic study models and making retainers, then later as an orthodontic assistant.[4]

After graduating from Airline High School in 1987, Cope moved back to Dallas to study biology at Southern Methodist University where he graduated in December 1990. He attended dental school at Baylor College of Dentistry, graduating with honors in 1995.[4]

Jason then started his formal orthodontic education at Texas A&M University System - Baylor College of Dentistry, being the first person to undertake a dual program in both Orthodontics and a PhD in Craniofacial Biology. He received his orthodontic certificate in 1997, at which time he joined the orthodontic department as a clinical assistant professor.[3][4][8][14]

Jason continued his postdoctoral program in craniofacial biology as an NIDCR postdoctoral fellow through the National Institutes of Health for an additional two years. In 1999, after only 4 years of combined training, Dr. Cope completed his dissertation and was awarded a PhD for his work on craniofacial distraction osteogenesis, at that time a new surgical technique in orthodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics.[4][14]

Dr. Cope’s clinical and research interests focus on Temporary Anchorage Devices, surgical orthodontic treatment, and interdisciplinary treatment.[4] He also developed several clinical protocols for TAD treatment - the open bite closure technique,[15] the molar protraction technique,[15] and the use of an MSI for the temporary replacement of maxillary lateral incisors in growing children.[16] He also holds 3 patents in the field of Temporary Anchorage Devices.[5][6][7]

Cope was the guest editor for the March 2005 issue of Seminars In Orthodontics on Temporary Anchorage Devices where he introduced the historical development leading up to the creation of TADs, and introduced the nomenclature system that is used for describing TADs.[11][12][13][17] He followed up in 2007 with the definitive textbook on TADs entitled OrthoTADs: The Clinical Guide and Atlas.[4]

Dr. Cope also co-edited a multimedia CD-ROM on Distraction Osteogenesis and a 600-page textbook, Craniofacial Distraction Osteogenesis.[17] In addition, he has published 66 scientific journal articles and book chapters and given over 300 invited lectures nationally and internationally.[18][19][20][21] As a result of his contributions in orthodontics, Cope has been interviewed by multiple media outlets and broadcast live in US media markets on ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX.[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]

Currently, Dr. Cope treats patients in his private practice as well as teaching part-time in the Orthodontic Departments and both Texas A&M University School of Dentistry,[8][9] and Saint Louis University.[30] He has also been an ADA CERP provider of dental continuing education since 2010 providing private hands-on courses and online courses.[31][32]
