Law's Law is an unofficial rule found in many British boarding schools. It is believed to be named after a student in the 1820s, whose surname was 'Law'. According to public school legend, this boy was so fed up of other boarders going into his dormitory that he locked the door and threatened to fire a cricket ball at anybody who forced it open. Then, people began calling this 'Law's Law', as it was strictly imposed by staff at the school, who were afraid of this happening to them. Other members of the school began to impose 'Law's Law'. However, when the school became very antisocial, Law's favourite member of staff convinced him to allow up to 4 others in his room at once. The other boarders switched to this variation, and now 'Law's Law' is a popular tradition across the United Kingdom. Variations include 'Law's Catch', where any boy trying to enter the dormitory must catch a cricket ball (this was a rule imposed by another boy in the 1900s) and 'Law's Scribe', where any person trying to enter the room must write down a description of themselves to be slid under the door before entry. It is unknown when this tradition started, but it has mainly died out, in most schools.
