Mouhamed Abdulla, B.Eng., M.Eng., Ph.D., MIEEE, MACM (born 1979) is a Canadian research engineer from the Greater Montréal region of the province of Québec. As a consequence of his research work in Scandinavia, he spends most of his time in Gothenburg, Kingdom of Sweden.

Biography

Early life

At a young age during high-school years at École secondaire Saint-Luc of the Commission scolaire de Montréal, Mouhamed was a Royal Canadian Air Cadet Member of the 701 Squadron. The purpose of this federally funded youth program focuses on good citizenship, leadership skills, physical fitness, survival training, and aviation/aeronautics.[1] This experience eventually lead him to eventually become an aerospace engineer in later years.

Qualifications

Dr. Abdulla received, respectively in 2003, 2006, and 2012, a B.Eng. degree (with Distinction) in Electrical Engineering (Electronics, Power), an M.Eng. degree in Aerospace Engineering (Avionics), and a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (Telecommunications, Wireless) all at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Since the fall-2015, his research is funded by the European Commission as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow under the European Union (EU) Framework Program for Research and Innovation: Horizon 2020 (H2020-MSCA-IF). He is pursuing this esteemed fellowship with the Department of Signals and Systems at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.[2] This individual fellowship award is Europe's most competitive and prestigious award [3] with high selectivity in general for intra-European (IEF) and international outgoing (IOF) fellows; and even more so by international incoming research fellows (IIF) to Continental Europe.

Until 2015, he was a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Québec in Montréal. Previously he was a Systems Engineering Researcher in the Wireless Design Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Concordia University. Moreover, for nearly 7 years since 2003, he worked at IBM Canada Ltd. as a Senior Technical Specialist. He holds several awards, honors and recognition from international organizations, government, academia, and industry.

His research interest include: vehicular communications, mobile communications, space/satellite communications, network performance, channel characterization and interference mitigation. Since 2011, his biography is listed in Marquis Who's Who in the World publication.

Services

Dr. Abdulla is professionally affiliated with IEEE, IEEE ComSoc, IEEE YP (S'02-GSM'09-M'12), ACM, AIAA, and OIQ. He was a member of the IEEE Executive Committee of the Montréal Section, where he was the Secretary in 2013, and the Treasurer of the Section in 2014 and 2015. In addition, he was the Secretary and Treasurer of IEEE ComSoc and ITSoc societies. Furthermore, he is an Associate Editor of IEEE Technology News Publication and IEEE AURUM Newsletter;[4] and Editor of Journal of Next Generation Information Technology and Advances in Network and Communications Journal. He regularly serves as a referee for a number of Canadian Funding Agencies and journal publications such as: IEEE, Wiley, Springer, EURASIP, Elsevier, ACM, IET and Hindawi. He also contributes as an examination writer for the IEEE/IEEE ComSoc WCET® Certification Program. Besides, he constantly serves as a Technical Program Committee (TPC) member for several international IEEE and Springer conferences.[5]

Public Education

During Apr. 11-22, 2016, Dr. Abdulla was invited by the organizers of the 20th International Science Festival in Gothenburg (Swedish: Vetenskapsfestivalen), which is Europe's leading popular science event (with 70,000 visitors), to present his latest research in 5G intelligent transportation system (ITS), particularly on latest breakthroughs in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications for next generation autonomous vehicles. Moreover, with the support of Chalmers University of Technology, he co-organized outreach seminars for this festival using interactive techniques on the process of R&D engineering and the future of telecommunication systems to the wider Swedish public. Furthermore, along with engineering researchers from Volvo Group and Ericsson Research, he was invited to participate on panel discussions that analyzed the huge significance and integral role that 5G network will play in our everyday life within the next 5 to 10 years. Topics related to long-term vision for technological innovation and scientific progress were also explored.[6][7]
