The Taipei Representative Office in Italy; (Template:Zh) (Italian: Ufficio di Rappresentanza di Taipei in Italia) represents the interests of Taiwan in Italy in the absence of formal diplomatic relations, functioning as a de facto embassy.
Its counterpart in Taiwan is the Italian Economic, Trade and Cultural Promotion Office in Taipei.[1]
It was established in 1990 as the Associazione Economica e Culturale di Taipei, before adopting its present name in 1996.[2] Another body, based in Milan, known as Centro Commerciale Per L'Estremo Oriente had previously been established as a trade office in the early 1970s.[3]
Until 1970, when Italy established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, as the Republic of China had an Embassy in Rome and a Consulate-General in Milan.[4]
It is separate from the Embassy of the Republic of China to the Holy See, which, while located in Italian territory, is accredited to the Vatican City.[5]
It also has responsibility for San Marino, Malta, Albania and Macedonia.[6]
