A Tron Tunnel is a security hole in the implementation of certain quantum security protocols as it relates to blockchain technology.
History
Through the coordinated efforts of Russian hacker organizations CyberVor and Sofacy Group, a potential weakness has been discovered in a Chinese quantum security system nicknamed Chángchéng. This system appears to be a clandestine part of the widely publicized QUESS (Template:Zh).[1][2] Although still denied, the existence of the Chinese security system - which utilizes quantum mechanics and was originally thought to achieve perfect secrecy - was exposed in early August 2016 to select circles of individuals and organizations by Russian hackers sniffing Tor networks. Upon further scrutiny, a backdoor[3] was discovered in the implementation of the system which could potentially allow a hacker to bypass the quantum aspects of the system. This particular type of security hole has been named a Tron Tunnel. Although at the time of its discovery there was no known rootkit implementation to exploit the weakness, on August 20, 2016 an anonymous white paper was distributed through several darknet servers that demonstrated how the weakness could be exploited by employing blockchain technology through compromised exit nodes in the Tor network. It is unknown if the hackers have found vulnerabilities in similar US systems or if the US has even developed their program far enough to encounter a Tron Tunnel.
