Musical artist

Alexandra "Alex" Porat is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Porat first gained recognition from posting covers on YouTube. Her channel has accumulated over 85 million views.[1] Since then, she has released a slew of original singles.

Early life

Born in Canada in 1999, Porat was raised in Toronto. Her earliest performance was when she was 4-years-old during a trip to Beijing, China.[2]

She began posting YouTube videos in 2016, gaining viral success with her covers of "You Are The Reason" by Calum Scott and "Don't Watch Me Cry" by Jorja Smith, which received 24 million and 14 million views, respectively. Prior to YouTube, she studied business management at Ryerson University.

Career

In February 2019, she competed on the Canadian singing competition series, The Launch.[3]

In 2020, Porat released her debut self-titled EP, featuring her six most popular covers. Shortly afterwards, she released a single titled "Only Hanging Out Cuz I'm Lonely" as well as an accompanying video.[4][5] Flaunt magazine called the song "just as infectious as the bubbly warmth that comes with the start of a new fling."[6] Indie88 praised the song as "bubbly indie pop track with vulnerable, relatable lyrics."[7] Around this time, Amazon Music named her one of the year's Artists to Watch.[8]
