Basim Elkarra is a candidate for the Area 5 seat of the Twin Rivers Unified School District Board of Trustees in California, United States.[1] He's a civil rights leader serving as the director of the Sacramento chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR),[2] former board member of the Sacramento chapter of the Americal Civil Liberties Union, and serves on the Executive Board of the California Democratic Party.[3]
Twin Rivers Unified School District Election
After the former school trustee Cortez Quinn resigned from the Area 5 seat,[4] Sonja Cameron was swiftly appointmented to the vacant seat.[5] Local community members found it unfair that Sonja Cameron was appointed to the seat without an election and signatures were collected for a special election which will take place on May 12, 2015.[6] Sonja Cameron runs opposed by Basim Elkarra.
Controversy
In 2006, Senator Barbara Boxer withdrew a "certificate of accomplishment" from Basim Elkarra as being part of CAIR, due to suspicions about possible connections with CAIR and Hamas. This revocation was criticized by several organizations including the ACLU and the California Council of Churches. [7]
