"Ha Ha" (stylized as HAHA!) is a song performed by American independent recording artist Kendall Davis (under the alias @kendallisall). The Alternative R&B mid-tempo serves as an official buzz single and was released on May 27, 2016 as a non-album single. Upon release, "Ha Ha" received favorable reviews among fans and critics alike. One fan of the song noted, "You will never stop hearing the song because laughing is something that people have done since the beginning of time and will continue to do for years to come". Another critic added, "the song has been immortalized through the on-going laughter of many".

Background and release

The song was released on May 27, 2016 exclusively to SoundCloud as a buzz single. The song and it's cover art was recorded and created sometime between 2013 and 2014 and was kept unreleased until being randomly released due to the desire for "imperfection", being released with no final mixing and mastering done to the vocals or track. Seen by some as a demo, the song eventually went viral.

"Ha Ha" is a midtempo alternative R&B song, which makes use of a heavy bassline and hand clapping beat, among other instruments. The song was purposely recorded in a flat pitch in the key of C minor in order to match the flow of the song and to keep the delivery of the vocals and lyrics simple rather than making them more complicated.

Lyrically, the song describes a protagonist-antagonist type relationship between two people with the protagonist experiencing betrayal, lack of loyalty and not being able to trust the antagonist while being mocked by them. As the protagonist does all they can to make it work between them, they ultimately discover the untrustworthy values in the antagonist and decides to end their association with the antagonist while overcoming the antagonistic efforts to defeat them.

"Ha Ha" samples Zendaya's 2013 song "My Baby", composed and produced by Bobby Brackins and Nic Nac.

Cover artwork

The cover artwork for the single used a photo of the character Nelson[1] from the Primetime Emmy Award winning show The Simpsons (the longest-running American sitcom,[2] and the longest-running American scripted primetime television series[3]), who's best known for his signature mocking laugh "Ha-ha!". Nelson appears green on the single cover rather than yellow as seen in The Simpsons series with black hair instead of brown and wearing a grey shirt underneath a baby blue vest while he's being seen pointing towards the sky against a blue backdrop while the song title and artist's name appears in red. Despite these facts, the primary colors for the single are green and blue. The cover showed the social media platform handle "@kendallisall", which included the "at" symbol.

Influence and legacy

The cover art for the single made a creative impact and prompted other artists to use a similar approach for artwork used for their own releases including: Jay Critch ("Yoshi"[4]), YBN Nahmir ("Rubbin Off the Paint"[5]), DDG ("Lettuce"[6] and "Hood Santa"[7][8]), Famous Dex ("Ok Dexter"[9] and the Dex Meet Dexter[10] and Dexter the Robot[11] mixtapes hosted by DJ Shon), Rich the Kid (Rich Forever II[12], Rich Forever 3[13] and Rich4Ever[14][15]), Hollywood featuring Lil Reed ("Stupid"[16]), Ugly God ("Water"[17][18], "Bitch!"[19] and "That's Okay"[20]), Charlie Bags (Chuckie Bagz: The Mixtape hosted by Dee Jay Slu[21]), Young Nudy (SlimeBall 3[22][23]) and Skooly ("Lil Boy Shit"[24]) among others, who's covers depicted re-imagined interpretations of characters from other television series, video games and films like: Yoshi, Rick and Morty, Danny Phantom, Dexter's Laboratory, Invader Zim, Animaniacs, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z, Rugrats, Chucky and The Boss Baby) by methods of parody.

Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World cover artwork

The only other artist that had a similar approach towards cover art for a music project was, Lil Uzi Vert, who released Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World[25] with cover art inspired by Scott Pilgrim characters. Although the song and concept art for "Ha Ha" was created prior to the release of Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World in 2013/2014, the song was released on May 27 a month after the release of Lil Uzi Vert's mixtape on April 15 of the same year. The mistake was recorded in between 2015 and late 2016 and the two concepts for each individual artworks do not conflict.
