She is best known for her roles as Bailey in the horror film Haunt (2019), as Janelle in the YouTube Red series Step Up: High Water (2018–2019), and for voicing Freddie Facilier in the second season of the Disney Channel television series Descendants: Wicked World (2016–2017).

She and her sister China Anne McClain have a YouTube channel. As a singer, she is best known as a member of the sister girl group Thriii with her sisters.

Early life

Lauryn Alisa McClain was born on January 9, 1997 in Decatur, Georgia.[1][2] Her father, Michael McClain, is a music producer who produced Solange Knowles' debut album Solo Star (2002).[3][4] Her mother, Shontell, is a songwriter and former screenwriter.[5][6][7][8] She has one older sister, Sierra, and one younger sister, China Anne, who are also actresses and singers, and has a younger brother, Gabriel.[9] At the age of 13, she taught herself pointe.[10]

2005–2010: Daddy's Little Girls and 3mcclaingirls

After her sister was discovered in 2004 by a music executive who heard her sing, China was cast in the film The Gospel (2005) with Lauryn cast in the children's choir.[11] Around this time the sisters formed the music group the 3mcclaingirls. In December 2005, while on the set of Tyler Perry's House of Payne, China introduced her sisters Sierra and Lauryn to a show producer and the sisters performed a song for him. They were then cast in the film Daddy's Little Girls (2007) as the James sisters.[12] In 2008 McClain starred as Faye in the short film Six Blocks Wide[13] and the three sisters began posting videos on their YouTube channel of themselves singing covers of songs.[14] She also portrayed Malia Obama in a sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2008).[15]

2011–2014: McClain Sisters and A.N.T. Farm

After China landed her own show on the Disney Channel called A.N.T. Farm in 2011, McClain and her sisters changed their group name to the McClain Sisters, and sang two songs on the A.N.T. Farm soundtrack: "Perfect Mistake" and "Electronic Apology".[16] McClain was also a theme music composer for the series.[17] In December the group performed their version of the song "Jingle Bell Rock" at the 2011 Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade.[18][19] In March 2012, the group signed with Hollywood Records,[20][21] released their song "Rise", and was the opening act in Houston at the Houston Rodeo for Big Time Rush on their Better with U Tour.[22][23]

The next month they performed at the 2012 White House Easter Egg Roll.[24][25] In November 2012, McClain guest starred with her sister Sierra and performed the song "Go" during the episode "chANTs of a Lifetime" for A.N.T. Farm.[26] From late 2012 to 2016, McClain and her sisters continued performing and releasing songs. Most notably they released their song "The Great Divide" which peaked at number 4 on Billboard's US Kid Digital Songs;[27] performed at the pre-show for the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards and presented an award;[28] and had their first headlining concert at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California;[29][30] and performed at 19th Arthur Ashe Kids' Day.[31] From the summer to the fall of 2014, the group embarked on a state fair tour around the United States.[32] In December of 2013, China announced on Twitter that A.N.T. Farm would be ending after its third season.[33][34] Shortly after this announcement, the McClain Sisters parted ways with Hollywood Records. After leaving the record label, the group changed their name from the McClain Sisters to simply McClain.[35][36][37]

2015–present: Acting recognition

In 2016, McClain starred as Emma in the film BearCity 3.[38][39] Her sister girl group went on hiatus around this time.[40] She then went on to take over the role of Freddie Facilier, the daughter of Dr. Facilier, in the second season of the Disney Channel series Descendants: Wicked World (2016–2017) after her sister China was cast in Descendants 2.[41][42] For the series she sang the song "Rather Be With You".[17][43] In 2018 McClain was cast in the lead role of Janelle in the YouTube Red series Step Up: High Water (2018–2019).[44][45] The series was highly successful, with the first episode gaining 1.3 million views, and the first season overall generating over 22 million views within a few months of its release.[46][47] That same year it was also announced that she was cast in the horror film Superstition — The Rule of Three’s.[48]

In 2019, McClain starred as the main role Bailey in the horror film Haunt, which received generally positive reviews from critics.[49] The film received a limited release and earned $2.4 million at the box office,[50] later premiered on Shudder, where it was ranked the #1 most watched movie premiere of 2019.[51]

In June 2020, her girl group changed their name to Thriii, and performed at Radio Disney Presents ARDYs Summer Playlist.[52]

Personal life

In 2014, Lauryn and China created a YouTube channel where they posted singing videos, challenges, tags, and Q&As. Sierra appeared in several of the channel's videos. Their last YouTube video was posted in April 2018 and the channel has since been inactive. As of 2020, the channel has approximately 677,000 subscribers and over 28 million views. They have since renamed the channel Thriii.[53][54]

She is a Christian and resides in Los Angeles, California with her family.[55][56]
