Mike Levin was raised in South Orange County and attended high school at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. He completed his bachelor's degree at Stanford University and then attended Duke University School of Law. After law school, he served as Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Orange County, and has worked as an attorney focused on environmental and energy regulatory compliance and government affairs. An advocate of clean energy and sustainable transportation, he founded an environmental nonprofit in Orange County and has served on the board of another environmental nonprofit based in San Diego.
