Rajiv Mishra's family had donated over 1300 acres of land to the "Bhoodan Movement". He belongs to family of freedom fighters. His eleven close family members were very actively involved in freedom movement and none have sought for any government support.

His father Late Shri Mritunjay Narayan Mishra[no citations needed here] a social activist, was very active in Mithilanchal, established several educational and social institution's/bodies all across Bihar. His elder uncle Late Shri Lalit Narayan Mishra was the Railway Minister of India. His younger uncle Dr. Jagannath Mishra has been Chief Minister of Bihar for three terms. His cousin Shri Nitish Mishra was a cabinet minister in Bihar. His Brother in Law Shri P. K. Thakur is DG Police, Bihar.
