Thomas Max Wheelwright (born April 29, 1953) is an American businessman, certified public accountant[1], and author specializing in wealth and taxes.[2][3] Wheelwright is the founder and CEO of WealthAbility, LLC.[4], a private financial education company that teaches the principles of tax-savings and wealth-building through speaking engagements, books, and videos. Wheelwright is known for writing best-selling book Tax-Free Wealth and for being an advisor and speaker for Robert Kiyosaki, having contributed to several of his books and conference tours, particularly those related to the Rich Dad brand.[5][6]

Early life and career

Since 1983, Wheelwright has developed tax, business and wealth strategies for small-business owners and investors in the manufacturing, real estate and high-tech fields. From 1985 – 1988 Wheelwright led professional training for CPAs at Ernst & Whinney’s (now Ernst & Young's) National Tax Department in Washington, D.C., during which the last overhaul of the tax code, the Tax Reform Act of 1986 was advanced and signed by President Ronald Reagan.[7][8]

Wheelwright founded Thomas Wheelwright & Company (now Wheelwright Manahan, PLLC) in 1995 in Tempe, Arizona.[9][10] As of 2015, the company had worked with small businesses and entrepreneurs in over 30 countries.[11] Wheelwright served as an adjunct professor in the Masters of Tax program at Arizona State University for 14 years, where he created the course for teaching multi-state tax planning techniques and personally taught hundreds of graduate students.[12] Wheelwright currently teaches his own Advanced Tax and Asset Protection class along with Garrett Sutton, Esq.

Wheelwright collaborated with Irish author Philip McKernan on South of 49 (2009)[13] and Fire Sale (2010).[14] Wheelwright also regularly contributes to Entrepreneur Magazine and Inman News as a tax expert, and has appeared on various news channels and podcasts including Fox & Friends and NBC News Radio.[15][16] Wheelwright published his book Tax-Free Wealth in 2012,[17] and a 2nd Edition was published in 2018 to address changes in tax law after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.[18]

Wheelwright is a tax advisor to American businessman and author Robert Kiyosaki.[19] Since 2012, Wheelwright has been a keynote speaker at Rich Dad conferences worldwide on six continents (Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America) with Kiyosaki. Wheelwright authored chapters 1 and 21 of Robert Kiyosaki's book, "The Real Book of Real Estate" (2016). Wheelwright also contributed to Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad Success Stories" (2003), "Who Took My Money" (2004), "Unfair Advantage" (2011), and "More Important Than Money, An Entrepreneur's Team" (2017).[20] Wheelwright was a contributor to the Trump University Wealth Builder Action Plan.[21]

In 2018, Wheelwright founded WealthAbility, LLC as a private financial education company. The company specializes in advising CPAs and other tax advisors how to build their business through providing tax and wealth strategy services to their clients. Wheelwright hosts The WealthAbility Show with Tom Wheelwright CPA, and a podcast called The WealthAbility™ for CPAs Show.[22]

Business & financial advice

Wheelwright has endorsed Donald Trump’s economic plans and tax reforms, particularly efforts to reduce business taxes in the United States.[23][24] Wheelwright supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 that reduced the U.S. corporate income tax rate, stating "If we had a 15% corporate tax rate, we would effectively become a tax shelter country, encouraging foreign companies to headquarter here”.[25] Wheelwright has also endorsed Trump’s proposed US border taxes and tariffs, claiming that they would help to reinvigorate the economy.[26][27]

Wheelwright has a master's of Professional Accounting degree from the University of Texas at Austin with a specialty in Tax and a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in accounting and a minor in French from the University of Utah.[28]

Personal life

Wheelwright lives in Arizona, and is a commentator on Arizona tax-laws.[29][30] Wheelwright has been married to Louanne T. Gagnon since May 1, 2015. He has two sons, Max David and Samuel Joseph Wheelwright.
