/e/[1] is a free and open-source operating system and associated web services for smartphones on the Android mobile platform. It is developed on a fork of LineageOS. The Operating System is developed by the e.foundation[2] founded by Gaël Duval[3]. /e/, formerly called eelo[4], is a ready-to-use de-googled[5] mobile OS and related online services usable by anyone[6]. The /e/ development team aims to progressively add more features to improve the user's data privacy[7][8].

Background

In 2017 Gaël Duval, through a series of articles titled “Leaving Apple & Google: my /e/ odyssey” (one[9], two[10], three[11]) proposed the concept of an Operating System without user data spying applications or services. This was followed by a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign[12]. The OS was initially named eelo[13][14]. The name was subsequently changed to /e/ due to copyright issues[15].

Development

The first Minimum Viable Product (MVP) based on Lineage OS 14.1 was released on 12 September 2018[16] with the source code[17] available on Gitlab.

The second MVP based on Lineage OS 15.1 was released on November 22, 2018[18][19].

Pre-installed Apps

The OS includes a set of essential apps to cover most common needs, including navigation, messaging and storage. The OS comes free from the bloatware sometimes pre-installed by phone manufacturers or carriers.

  • Calendar - calendar functionality with different views: daily, week, month or agenda. Can display several calendar feeds. Forked from Etar.
  • Calculator - combines a four-function calculator and advanced functions in landscape mode.
  • Clock - combines alarm, world clock, timer and stopwatch. Also includes a night mode.
  • Contacts - phonebook for contacts, phone numbers and other key info like email, address, etc...
  • File manager - to locate files on the smartphone and synchronize with file stored online.
  • Gallery - direct access to pictures and videostaken with the device or viewed in messaging apps. Can be viewed in a timeline or by albums.
  • Mail - client to send and receive emails. Forked form K9.
  • Maps - offers an alternative to Google Maps. Features Point of Interests, favorites, can be connected with the users contacts for easy navigation. Forked from Magic Earth.
  • Notes - simple note-taking app.
  • Tasks - a task manager that can be connected with the calendar for reminders and better task management.
  • Telegram - instant messaging app featuring end to end encryption.
  • Browser - a lightweight metabrowser protecting the user's privacy. Forked from Searx
  • Weather - weekly weather forecast for a defined location.
  • Recorder - allows recording of screen and voice.
  • Light - control smartphone LED or screen to be used as a flashlight.
  • Phone - to make phone calls, feature favorites, call history and connects with phone book.
  • Messaging - SMS and instant messaging. Forked from Signal.

The OS comes without any of the Google apps that are normally pre-installed in Android phones.

Community

At present /e/ development builds cover 49 devices[20] and an active user base of about one thousand users. To interact with its users and provide software issue support, the /e/ team uses Telegram channels and a web based community forum[21] .
