Bowen Park Disc Golf Course is a public 18-hole disc golf course in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.[1] The course is set on mostly flat terrain in a heavily wooded area of the park.[2][3] Bowen Park Disc Golf Course is one of the oldest and best-rated disc golf courses in British Columbia.[4][5][6] It is the home course of the Nanaimo Disc Golf Club[7] and Canadian professional disc golfers Geoffrey McNamara and Kristy Lee.[8][9][10]

History

Bowen Park is named after brothers George and James Bowen, owners of the San Francisco-based Western Fuel Company, who donated the land to the City of Nanaimo in 1918 with a condition of it being used for park purpose only.[11] Official land title registration took place in 1931, and the park's disc golf course was established in 1995.[11]

Course details

Bowen Park Disc Golf Course is equipped with yellow Innova DISCatcher baskets, but "tonal pole"-style targets were previously used on half the holes at least until 2012.[12][3] The course also features concrete tee pads and a non-standard Blue Par (62) and White Par (54) tee configuration, where blue tees are designed for recreational "Amateur" players and white tees are designed for "Advanced" players, contrary to PDGA guidelines.[13][14]

The course is available to the public at no charge, on a first-come, first-served, walk-on basis, and players can borrow disc golf discs at Bowen Park reception desk.[15]

Tournaments

Bowen Park Disc Golf Course has hosted several PDGA-sanctioned events,[4] including the annual Hub City Huck tournament, since 2013.[16] The course also hosts a tournament in the annual B.C. Disc Sports Duck Golf series since 2016, with the next tournament being scheduled for February 1, 2020.[17][18] Bowen Park Disc Golf Course was a venue at the 2007 BC Seniors Games, where disc golf was a demonstration sport.[19][20]
