Abra is the self-titled debut album of Raymond Abracosa, more known as Abra. Released under Artifice Records and distributed by Ivory Music & Video, it was released on December 1, 2013 in the Philippines through Digital format which exclusively available at Itunes Philippines.[1] The original physical released was on August 10, 2013 but pushed to another unannounced schedule until it was distributed digitally in December of the same year. After a year, the physical album has finally released on February 21, 2014.[2]

The first single from Abra is "Gayuma", which has reached almost 30 million YouTube views. The song peaked at #1 on You Tube and Myx Philippines and garnered 2 million and 6 million views on its first week and month, respectively. The single also became a chart-topping one across the country receiving heavy rotation both radio and television airplays. His second single, "Ilusyon" featuring Arci Munoz, received positive reviews from critics and fans alike.

Critical Reception

When the FlipTop and Sunugan rap battle leagues came about in 2010, Abra was one of the first battle emcees to compete and gradually make a name for himself. After a couple of intense rap battles, Abra has been considered as one of the heavyweights in Filipino rap battling. He was well known for his chart-topping hit song, "Gayuma". Using his compelling lyrical style coupled with witty antics, he is able to impress viewers and artists alike; and has YouTube videos that have amassed millions of views. It did not take long until Abra was able to perform on live television, radio shows and various events across the country.

The self-titled album went into long process in the making. Abra put so much effort to finish his debut album and according to him he wrote all his songs from conceptualizing it to music video. He collaborated with some other artists such Chito Miranda of Parokya Ni Edgar, KZ Tandingan, Arci Munoz, Tyro, Jeriko, Loonie, Ron Henley, Lyrically Deranged Poets, and Josef. However, he emphasized that his record would be different from other artists of hip-hop. It will be inspirational and contained good values with a mixture of entertainment. I’ll make real hip-hop music with cleverly composed rhymes, like a really good and catchy chorus. A good song that will be embraced by everyone regardless of their genre and age, he added.

"Gayuma" (translated as "Potion") is the first single from the album that features Tyro and Jeriko. It was released on September 30, 2013 and accompanied with a music video which directed by Abra.[3] A single DVD was released which independently distributed among record bars, it include the official MV and behind the scene footage. The music video of the single became the most viewed OPM so far reaching almost 30 million views in You Tube. It was more popularized when it conquered the top of Myx Hit Chart for two consecutive weeks. Its music video and the song itself show cases unconditional love with humor that described his love interest wasn’t physically beautiful but he kept fell in love to her deeply and he himself asking, why? Until such time he discovered that he was under a love potion. Anyway, abra relates that the song is a bit raw for him due to the fact that he put his heart and soul on to it and not expecting it to be a chart-topping hit.

However, the single received multiple awards suchFavorite Music Video and Favorite Urban Video at the 2013 MYX Music Awards; and Best Collaboration at the 2013 Urban Music Awards.

"Ilusyon" (translated as "Illusion") was released on June 1, 2013 as the second single from the album and Arci Munoz as the guest vocalist.[4] The single adopted socio-political issues of Philippine government as its concept. The single was accompanied with a music video, which directed by Abra, that gave more life onto it. It didn’t match the success of "Gayuma" due to it only reached top 5 in most radio stations and television airplay including Myx Hit Chart.
