Gheorghe Caranda was a Romanian army officer and early aviator. He was learning how to fly on Farman III biplanes, and was a member of the Cotroceni Piloting School founded by George Valentin Bibescu.[1]

On July 21, 1912 he was killed when he crashed his plane on Cotroceni field in Bucharest, becoming the first Romanian to die in an aircraft accident. His name is listed first on the Romanian Airmen Heroes Memorial in Bucharest, before that of Aurel Vlaicu.
