oooh, orphan

Vivienne Hu (Chinese: 薇薇安胡) is a Chinese American New York City-based fashion designer. She was born in China and educated in Germany and the United States.

Early life and education

Hu was born to a family of business entrepreneurs in Anhui, China where she spent her childhood years. For her college education, she moved to Germany for six years to study at the university of Hohenheim.[1] In an interview she mentioned “those 6 years affected my sense of fashion”.[2] She graduated with a degree in finance from the Universität Hohenheim in Germany in 2002.[3] She then moved to the United States to continue a Master’s studies in business and economics.[4] Later in her life, Hu decided to make a career transition into the fashion world. She enrolled in the Parsons the New School for Design in 2010 and has earned a degree in fashion design.[1]

Before her fashion endeavors, Hu has worked in the investment banking industry in New York for over 3 years. After a formal fashion design training from Parsons and an accumulation of industry experience at Oscar de la Renta and Yigal Azrouel, Hu founded her own brand and debuted her first Spring/Summer collection in New York in 2012.[5] She launched her first flagship store in Soho, New York in 2013.[3] She has designed red carpet/event dresses at requests for public figure clients like Raven Symone,[6] Jo Becker, Julie Yaeger,[7] Ramona Rizzo,[8] Tomoko Shibata, Lennon Stella,[9] Brianne McLaughlin[10] and Gabriela Isler.[11]

Since September 2014, Hu has hosted her brand’s runway shows at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.[5] In July 2015 she was named a Swarovski Collective Designer for 2016.[12] The media exposure through the fashion week runway shows have drawn a wide attention to her designs, and she became widely recognized as an “Up and Coming Designer”[13][14][15][16] and a representative emerging Asian-origin designer who hits the New York Fashion Week.[17][18][19] Some of her designes have been featured in the Trend Analysis for the New York Fashion Week [20][21][22][23][24] In March 2015, Hu showed her Fall/Winter 2015 collection at the Shenzhen Fashion Week for her first international showing.[25][26][27]

Hu has served as a juror for the Fashion Design Thesis Review for the Parsons School of Fashion.[4][17] The fashion magazines that have covered her runway shows and designs include Bazaar, Veranda, Elegant, Elle China,[28] Bazaar China, Art and Designs, Vivi, Chasseur.[29] In June 2015, she accepted a Recognition of Achievement award from Wells Fargo & sponsoring media as a representative from Asian American Community.[30]

Style and techniques

Inspired by her diverse cross-continental life experiences, Hu’s designs exhibit an “imaginative mix of European elegance, New York urban glamour and Asian exoticism”.[13] Reviews of her 2015 NYFW runway show commonly viewed her as a designer who make proficient and bold use of a variety of fabrics/techniques like “fur, suede, leather, python prints along with edgy cuts at the waistline, sleeves and knees”,[31] “The minimalist palette used with a bold cutout style”[31] “geometric patterns, cutouts, collar pipings, lamb fur, tulle, suede, leather and quilted fabric”.[32] With her dresses “made for strong personalities”,[33] her designs are believed to cater to the professional women with an edge.[16][31][33][34][35]
