National Orchid Day was founded by Mike and Faith Young and was registered through the National Day Registrar in 2015. The date of April 16 was designated as National Orchid Day as a commemoration to the couple's daughter who died during labor on April 16, 2014, her name is Orchid. On the year anniversary of losing Orchid a Kickstarter campaign was created with the goal of designating April 16 National Orchid Day which also falls within National Orchid Month. Within the first day the campaign goal was met bringing in over $1,500.
National Orchid Day was envisioned to simultaneously increase appreciation for the beautiful flowers and also increase awareness concerning pregnancy/infant loss.
